Toilet Training Neurodivergent Kids

Toilet training is one of those areas where standard advice ('do it in a weekend!') falls apart for many neurodivergent kids. Slower, more sensory-aware approaches usually work better — and often work eventually when nothing else has.

If you're feeling pressure from preschool, family, or yourself: it's okay for this to take longer. Readiness varies enormously.

Signs of Real Readiness

Common Sensory Snags

A Gentle Sequence

Most successful approaches start long before the 'training' itself: bathroom visits in clothes, sitting fully clothed, sitting with diaper off but no expectation, then slowly building up to actual use. The whole arc can take weeks or months — and the time spent on the early steps usually pays off in less resistance later.

When OT Helps

Pediatric OTs assess readiness, identify which sensory and motor pieces are getting in the way, and build an individualized plan with you. We also help with related challenges — interoception work, dressing skills, and the routines that hold toilet training together.
