Twice-exceptional, or 2e, describes individuals who have both exceptional intellectual or creative ability and a learning disability, neurodevelopmental condition, or other significant challenge. These children are often overlooked because their strengths can mask their struggles — or their struggles can mask their gifts.

The Challenge of Being 2e

Twice-exceptional learners often don't fit neatly into existing categories. A child with a high IQ and ADHD may be expected to "just try harder" rather than receive appropriate support. An autistic child with exceptional skills in one area may be underestimated in others. The result is that many 2e children are simultaneously unchallenged and unsupported.

Common 2e Profiles

Common combinations include: gifted + ADHD, gifted + autism, gifted + dyslexia, gifted + dyspraxia, and gifted + sensory processing disorder. Each combination creates a unique profile of strengths and challenges that requires individualized support.

How OT Supports 2e Learners

Neuroaffirmative OT for 2e learners starts by honoring the whole child — both the exceptional gifts and the genuine challenges. We work to reduce the barriers that prevent the child from accessing their gifts, build executive functioning and sensory regulation skills, and advocate for educational environments that challenge the child intellectually while supporting their learning differences.
