Weighted Blankets and Sensory Tools That Actually Work

Walk into any therapy supply website and you'll see hundreds of products promising sensory miracles. Most are fine. Some are genuinely helpful. A few are gimmicks. The truth is the right tool is the one that matches your nervous system — not the one with the best reviews.

Here's a practical OT-informed take on the categories that come up most.

Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets provide deep pressure, a calming proprioceptive input. They genuinely help many people fall asleep faster, stay asleep, or regulate during stressful moments.

Rule of thumb: about 10% of body weight. Heavier isn't better. For kids, talk to a pediatric OT before using one — they shouldn't be used for restraint or with very young children. Weighted lap pads are often a better starting point.

Compression Clothing

Chewables and Oral Tools

Chewing is a powerful regulator — it engages proprioceptive input through the jaw, one of the most densely innervated areas. Chewable jewelry (ARK Therapeutic, Chewigem, Munchables) gives kids and adults a socially acceptable, durable tool instead of pens, shirts, or fingers.

Crunchy snacks, gum, and ice chips often serve the same regulating purpose without a tool.

Fidgets

Fidgets are not toys — they're regulation tools when used right, and distractions when used wrong. The best fidgets are quiet, not visually engaging, and can be used without looking. Putty, smooth stones, silicone bracelets, and tangle toys all fit. Avoid fidgets that light up, click loudly, or pull eyes away from the task at hand.

What to Skip

Be skeptical of anything labeled 'sensory' that's really just a toy. Sound-machine apps and visual stim devices have their place, but they're add-ons, not regulation strategies. If a product promises to 'cure' sensory issues, it's selling something. The right tool is part of a routine, not a magic bullet.
