Executive functioning is an umbrella term for the mental processes that help us plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. Think of it as the brain's management system — and for many neurodivergent people, it's the area where the most support is needed.

What Executive Functioning Includes

Executive functioning encompasses working memory (holding information while using it), cognitive flexibility (adapting when plans change), inhibitory control (resisting impulses), planning and organization, time management, and emotional regulation. These skills affect virtually every area of daily life.

Why It Matters for Adults

Adults with executive functioning challenges often describe knowing what they need to do but feeling unable to start, losing track of time, forgetting important tasks, or becoming overwhelmed by multi-step projects. These aren't character flaws — they're neurological differences that respond well to the right strategies.

How OT Helps

Occupational therapists work with adults to identify which specific executive functioning skills are most challenging and develop individualized strategies. This might include external scaffolding systems, body-doubling techniques, time-blocking approaches, environmental modifications, and self-regulation tools.

Crucially, neuroaffirmative OT doesn't try to make you neurotypical — it helps you build systems that work with your brain, not against it. Many of our adult clients describe our work together as "finally feeling like I have a manual for my own brain."
