Neurodivergent burnout is a state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion that results from prolonged masking, sensory overwhelm, and the chronic effort of navigating a world not designed for your brain. It's different from general burnout, and it requires a different kind of recovery.

What Neurodivergent Burnout Looks Like

During burnout, people may lose skills they previously had — suddenly struggling with tasks that felt manageable before. Social communication becomes much harder. Sensory sensitivities intensify. The ability to mask collapses, which can feel terrifying in environments where masking felt necessary for safety. Profound fatigue and withdrawal are common.

The Role of Masking

Masking — suppressing natural autistic or ADHD behaviors and imitating neurotypical patterns — is one of the primary drivers of burnout. It takes an enormous amount of energy, and over time it depletes the system entirely. Recovery from burnout often requires reducing masking demands significantly.

How OT Supports Recovery

OT helps identify the activities and environments that are most depleting and those that are genuinely restorative. We work to redesign daily routines to include adequate recovery time, reduce unnecessary sensory and cognitive demands, and build a sustainable baseline — rather than pushing through until the next crash.

Recovery from neurodivergent burnout takes time and genuine rest. OT can be a compassionate, practical guide through that process.
