Adult OT
If you're a neurodivergent adult in the U.S., the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) gives you the right to request reasonable accommodations at work. The hard parts aren't the law — they're knowing what to ask for, how to ask without oversharing, and what to do when the answer is no.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. For specific cases, the Job Accommodation Network (askjan.org) is the gold-standard free resource.
You don't have to disclose your diagnosis to ask for an accommodation, but you'll likely need a brief letter from a healthcare provider (a doctor, therapist, or in some cases an OT) describing functional limitations and the accommodation that would address them. Stick to functional language — 'I focus better with consistent quiet' lands better than diagnostic labels.
Occupational therapists are trained in task analysis — breaking down what a job requires and matching it to your strengths and challenges. We can help you identify which accommodations are likely to have the highest impact, draft documentation, and build skills in self-advocacy. We also help you build the home-side and sensory-side infrastructure that makes your accommodations actually work once you have them.
