For decades, ADHD was considered primarily a condition of hyperactive little boys. The research base reflected this — studies largely involved male subjects, diagnostic criteria were written to match male presentations, and girls and women who didn't fit the mold were missed, misdiagnosed, or told they were "just anxious."
This is changing. But for many women, the ADHD diagnosis comes late — in their 30s, 40s, or beyond — often triggered by a child's diagnosis, a major life stressor, or finally reading a description of ADHD that sounds exactly like their entire life.
Why women with ADHD are missed
- Girls are more likely to present with inattentive ADHD, which is less visible than hyperactive
- Girls mask more effectively, using social skills and perfectionism to compensate
- Symptoms are attributed to anxiety, depression, or "just being emotional"
- The hyperactive-impulsive symptoms in girls often manifest as excessive talking, emotional dysregulation, and restlessness — not running around
Common feelings after diagnosis
Late diagnosis tends to bring a complicated mix of emotions:
- Relief — finally an explanation for decades of struggle
- Grief — for the support and understanding you didn't have earlier
- Anger — at the systems that missed you
- Confusion — "who am I if not the person who tried 10x harder than everyone else?"
Where OT fits in post-diagnosis
A diagnosis is a starting point, not an ending. OT can help you:
- Understand how your specific ADHD profile affects your daily functioning
- Build external systems that compensate for executive function challenges
- Identify what has been masking (sometimes at enormous cost) and reduce that load
- Set up your home and work environments to work with your brain
- Process the identity shift that comes with seeing yourself through a new lens
You've been working harder than everyone around you for years. You deserve support that actually works.
